- *** rec.music.info - Submission Guidelines and Etiquette ***
-
-
- Two introductory articles about rec.music.info are posted to this group and
- to news.answers each month. You are now reading the second article, which
- explains how to submit something to rec.music.info, and which answers some
- Frequently Asked Questions about the submission process. The first article
- is titled "Welcome to rec.music.info", and it might be a good idea to check
- it out as well.
-
-
- --- How do I submit something to rec.music.info?
-
- Two possibilities. You can use your newsreading software to just
- post the article to rec.music.info, as you would do with any other
- newsgroup. The difference is that the software recognizes the special
- status of r.m.info as a moderated group, and will e-mail your article to
- me, the moderator, instead of posting it to the group.
-
- Alternatively, you can mail your article directly to me at the following
- address:
-
- rec-music-info @ cp.tn.tudelft.nl
-
- Mailing me directly is probably (a wee bit) faster, but using the
- transparency offered by the newsreading software is probably more
- convenient.
-
-
- --- How soon will I see my article appear?
-
- It depends on how busy I am. Your article reaches me as mail, I have to
- read it first, possibly edit it, give it the stamp of approval, and finally
- send it on to the group.
-
- I try to check and process the rec-music-info mailbox at least twice a day.
- Since my site is in the Netherlands, the turnaround time between submitting
- something from, say, the USA and seeing it appear in rec.music.info on your
- site might be a bit longer than with groups moderated from within States.
-
-
- --- Should my article be in a specific format?
-
- No. If it is not totally illegible, I will accept it, and if it does not
- have a correct subject-line I will correct it -- that's what a moderator is
- for.
-
- However.
-
- You could do me a big favour by making sure your article confirms to these
- simple requirements:
-
- [1] A good, descriptive Subject line, with the appropriate keyword already
- included (see the first article for the set of keywords). See also the
- next section.
-
- [2] Include some background information to your article. One paragraph or
- even one sentence can be enough. Just don't forget that r.m.info is read by
- people who do not know all the context that your usual audience over in
- rec.music.whatever takes for granted.
-
- [3] Always mention what source you got the information from.
-
- [4] Don't forget to include a Followup-To header, at least if you don't
- want further discussion to automatically be forwarded to rec.music.misc,
- which is the default.
-
- As I said: if your article is appropriate I will post it even if you don't
- follow these guidelines, but then don't blame me for not processing it
- immediately. 'Perfect' articles I can send on with just two keystrokes.
- Stuff that needs editing is going to have to wait until I have time to do so.
-
-
- --- Anything else about Subject lines?
-
- Yes. If you are submitting a CONCERT article, please put the geographic
- location of those concerts in square brackets at the end of the Subject,
- like so:
- CONCERT: Trafassi Tour Dates [UK + Japan]
-
- If you are submitting a chart, please include the period the chart is
- valid for, e.g:
-
- CHART: Zimbabwe Top 40, 24/08/92
-
-
- --- What about crossposting?
-
- If you send something to rec.music.info, just name any group you'd like to
- crosspost to in the Newsgroups field. Then, when I approve the article for
- rec.music.info it will get automatically crossposted to any other groups
- mentioned.
-
- Ideally, everyone subscribing to a rec.music group will also read
- rec.music.info, so crossposting would be unnecessary and redundant.
-
- On the other hand: crossposts do not take up extra space; modern
- newsreaders can be configured to show you crossposted articles only once
- anyway; not everybody reads rec.music.info; and rec.music.info was never
- meant to reduce the volume of the regular newsgroups.
-
- You decide.
-
-
- --- And Follow-ups?
-
- If the only newsgroup you have specified is rec.music.info, then the
- Followup-To: field will always be set to rec.music.misc. If you do not
- want this, you must supply a Followup-To line of your own, and I will
- honor that one.
-
- If you specify newsgroups to crosspost to, then the Followup-To field
- will be set to include all the crossposted groups, excepting rec.music.info
- itself. Again, if you do not wish this behaviour, supply your own
- Followup-To line.
-
-
- --- Other Header lines?
-
- This is where things get a bit technical. For my moderation purposes I use
- a shell script to process the submissions I get. This shell script
- automatically extracts the following set of 'standard' header lines (if
- present): From, Subject, Newsgroups, Summary, Keywords, Organization,
- Reply-To, and Followup-To.
-
- All other header lines are discarded. If you have any special header lines
- that you want included in your article as it will appear in rec.music.info,
- you can do this by separating them from the other header lines in your
- article by one blank line. That way, they are regarded by my script as part
- of the message instead of the headers, and will be passed along.
-
- If you have no such special wishes, or if you did not quite follow the
- above two paragraphs, you can forget about them completely; you don't have
- to bother with *any* of the header lines. Just send me your submission.
-
-
- --- Why have I received no reply from you?
-
- I never reject anything in silence, and I make a point of it to answer
- all my mail. However, e-mail can and does get lost, every now and again.
-
- So, if you send me something, and you don't see it appear it rec.music.info,
- and you still have not heard from me in reply after say, one week, you can
- be pretty sure that either your mail never reached me, or that my asnwer
- has never reached you. In that case, please try again.
